“My PREP experience was overall a great and supportive experience. I received valuable mentoring from Dr. Krulwich as well as my PI, Dr. Matthew Shapiro and the postdoctorate that I worked closely with Dr. Janina Ferbinteanu. Dr. Krulwich worked with each PREP student on an individual basis and addressed what each student needed...whether it was further academic training, preparing applications, discussing the pros and cons of a program, providing life advice/perspective, or putting a student in contact with any further support that a student might need. Working in the Shapiro Lab was intense, but they did excellent science, were passionate about it, and invested their time and energy in teaching me some of the fundamental and critical concepts of Cognitive, Behavioral, and Systems Neuroscience and proper scientific thinking and protocol. The students were great as well and we all got along and supported one another on an academic and personal level.”
PREP alumni stay in close contact with us as they continue to progress into and through their doctoral programs. Mount Sinai PREP alumni have continued their studies here at Mount Sinai (3 PhD and 2 MD/PhD students) and in PhD programs at (2 other programs noted in parentheses): Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Emory Medical School, Jef-ferson Medical College (MS program), Harvard Medical School (MD program), New York University School of Medicine, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, University of Colorado Health Science Center School of Medicine, University of London (UK), University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, University of Puerto Rico, University of Texas Medical Branch (Gal-veston), and University of Virginia School of Medicine.
Several PREP alumni have won competitive fellowships and travel awards early on in their graduate careers. One PREP alumnus who entered a graduate program moved on to a career in high school science teaching without completion of the PhD. All other PREP alumni who entered PhD, MD/PhD or MD training continue to progress (and, in some instances near completion) in their doctoral programs.
“My experience at Sinai PREP was one in which I was truly treated as if I were already a PhD student, as opposed to someone between college and university. I was interested in PREP partially because I really wanted to know first-hand what I was getting into, so this was perfect. Combined with the remarkable support and guidance of Terry, I applied, interviewed and was accepted to graduate schools I was interested in attending. I decided to stay at Sinai, because not only was the emerging virus research (which I fell in love with) high caliber, but because of the rigor of the program.”
