Student Life

Mount Sinai School of Medicine offers all Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D. students who are accepted for matriculation a support package that includes a stipend ($29,000 for the 2009-2010 school year), the full cost of tuition, and a comprehensive medical insurance package. A competitive Travel Fund is available for travel to scientific meetings and special courses.

Support is continued throughout the student's program as long as satisfactory progress is made. Students in the Program are encouraged to apply for appropriate individual fellowships both for the honor that such an award confers and for the opportunity to enhance their own skills in preparing an extramural application.

Housing

Student housing is made available to Ph.D. and M.D./Ph.D students in the Mount Sinai neighborhood. Single students usually share apartment units in the Jane B. Aron Residence Hall that is in close proximity to both the Annenberg and the Icahn Medical Institute buildings. Each student has a private bedroom in a four- or six-person suite, with two or three bathrooms, a common kitchen, and a common living area. The amenities in the Residence Hall include a basketball court, a handball court, an exercise and weight room, a television lounge, a rooftop terrace and sun deck, laundry facilities, and a 24-hour doorman. Couples are offered apartments in other buildings in the neighborhood that are owned by Mount Sinai. Housing information is automatically sent to all students who are accepted into the Program. Our housing program enhances the sense of community among the different trainee groups within the institution and offers convenient access to laboratories, lectures, and special seminars throughout Mount Sinai.

Best Part of the Big Apple

Mount Sinai is located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan between Madison and Fifth Avenues. Its major research buildings reward students who come in early or stay late to attend to their experiments with panoramic views of the sun rising across the East River and setting over the west side of Central Park. Central Park is just outside our front door, providing inviting picnic, softball, and running opportunities (you are welcome to join Mount Sinai's running groups and the famous New York Road Runners Club). Mount Sinai is just blocks away from the serene Conservatory Garden of Central Park and is situated on Museum Mile, a stretch of Fifth Avenue that encompasses some of New York's most important art institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Jewish Museum, and the National Academy of Design. Students enjoy the athletic facilities of the nearby 92nd Street Y, as well as their many concerts, lectures, and poetry readings. They are also welcome to utilize Mount Sinai's superb Recreation Office to obtain tickets to numerous sports events, theatrical performances, concerts, and discounts at restaurants. Many of our students take advantage of the local opportunities for social outreach by participating in community service and educational projects.

Sometimes We Play

Students are active participants in their own community, representing their constituencies in student government and advisory committees and arranging for periodic parties, plays, and intramural sports events. The larger community of students in the New York metropolitan area affords opportunities for enlarging perspective and making scientific contacts while socializing. The Graduate School itself sponsors a number of get-togethers throughout the year, starting with the orientation of new students and culminating in the Annual Graduate School "Retreat" with a terrific winter party in between!

Sometimes We Take the Programming Initiative

In recent years, M.D./Ph.D. students have launched their own research and journal club and invited guest speakers to provide insight into various career paths of interest. In the larger community, students have been major participants in metropolitan New York-wide student programs on postgraduate opportunities and organized regional conferences focused on the physician-scientist model.
