The Humanities and Medicine Program provides a path to medical school that offers maximum flexibility in the undergraduate years for students to explore their interests in humanities and social sciences at top liberal arts colleges and research universities. The program assures highly motivated undergraduates admission to Mount Sinai upon successful completion of program requirements and graduation from their undergraduate program. MCAT's are neither required nor permitted to be taken.
An integral part of the program is an on-campus summer program at Mount Sinai, in which students participate after their junior year. This required 8-week summer program consists of classroom study in physics and organic chemistry along with an introduction to various clinical disciplines through weekly rotations.
Students apply to the Program in the first semester of their sophomore year. Juniors are considered on a space available basis. Ideal candidates for this highly selective program will have demonstrated an interest and ability in the sciences and math in high school, taken a minimum of science/math courses in college, and have personal attributes that show promise for becoming a compassionate and humanistic physician. We prefer applicants who have not enrolled in organic chemistry and we will require students to drop the second semester of organic chemistry if they enroll in the Program. In 2007, we received over 300 applications for the program. Thirty-four students were accepted. Their average first-year college GPA was 3.70 and their average combined SAT critical reading plus SAT math score was 1460. Students who have been accepted into the Program have the option of deferring their matriculation in medical school for one year after graduation from college. In addition to the required summer program, an optional pre-matriculation 6-week Summer Enrichment Program is available for those students who wish to expand their pre-med knowledge base.
Is there a contractual agreement that binds me to attend Mount Sinai School of Medicine if I am accepted into the Humanities and Medicine Program?
Upon acceptance in the Humanities and Medicine Program you will be asked to sign a contract. This contract stipulates that by attending the summer program you agree not to apply to other medical schools. Application to another medical school either requires that you first withdraw from the Humanities and Medicine Program or forces us to drop you from the Humanities and Medicine Program.
However, if at any time after you are accepted into the Humanities and Medicine Program, you decide that you do not want to become a doctor, you are free to withdraw from the Humanities and Medicine Program to pursue other career options. There is no penalty for withdrawing from the program.
If I turn down acceptance into the Humanities and Medicine Program, will this decision affect my chances of acceptance to Mount Sinai through the general application process?
No. Either turning down the acceptance into the program or withdrawing from the program will not affect your subsequent application to Mount Sinai.
If I am accepted into the Humanities and Medicine Program, am I automatically accepted into medical school?
Yes, provided that:
You will, however, need to fill out an AMCAS application and the Mount Sinai Supplemental Application in the year preceding your matriculation at Mount Sinai. You will not have to take the MCATs.
Can I defer my matriculation to Mount Sinai for two years?
Students in the Humanities and Medicine Program may defer their matriculation to Mount Sinai for one year. Only under exceptional circumstances, when the initial request for deferral is accompanied by a need to commit to some other activity for two years (e.g. Peace Corps, full-time Masters program), will deferral for two years be considered.
I completed a year of organic chemistry in my freshman year (or, during the summer after my freshman year). Am I still eligible to apply?
No. We will not consider applications from students who have completed a year of organic chemistry. If you are enrolled in the first semester of organic chemistry at the time of application, we will require you to drop the second semester if you are accepted into the program.
Do I have to fill out an AMCAS application?
Application to the Humanities and Medicine Program does not require an AMCAS application; however, matriculation at Mount Sinai does. If you are accepted into the Humanities and Medicine Program, you will be asked to fill out an AMCAS application during the year preceding your matriculation at Mount Sinai. At that time you will also be required to complete Mount Sinai's Supplemental Application, with the exception of the essay questions, but will not be required to pay the supplemental application fee.
From whom should I get letters of recommendation?
We require three letters of recommendation:
In choosing people to write letters of recommendation on your behalf, it is important to choose people who know you well. We are interested in learning about you as a person. Your academic abilities will be apparent from your transcripts. You must also give each of your recommenders a copy of our Humanities and Medicine Program Request for Letter of Recommendation Form which you can download and fill out. We do not accept letters of recommendation from a peer.
Do I have to complete the biology/chemistry requirement before applying?
You do not need to complete the required one year of biology and one year of chemistry before applying to the Humanities and Medicine Program. If accepted into the program, you must complete the chemistry requirement before the end of your junior year and the biology requirement before you graduate from your undergraduate institution.
I took a year of college biology (chemistry) during the summer at another institution. Is that acceptable?
We do not require that you complete a year of college biology or chemistry at your undergraduate institution. However, you should take these courses at an institution that you feel will give you the requisite background for medical school courses covering biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology, pharmacology, cell biology, physiology, microbiology, immunobiology, etc.
Do I have to take the labs associated with the biology (chemistry) courses?
Mount Sinai's admission policy states that "biology and chemistry must be accompanied by laboratory experience". You should master the material in your biology and chemistry courses in order to prepare yourself for medical school; in most cases, the labs associated with a course will help you to do so.
I plan to major in Psychology. Am I eligible for the Humanities and Medicine Program?
Majoring in the social sciences, including most psychology majors, is acceptable. The philosophy of the program is to minimize the time you spend in labs in order for you to direct your interests to your other academic and non-academic passions. Therefore, experimental psychology or neuroscience, sometimes integrated into a Psychology department, are not acceptable majors.
Are all applicants interviewed?
No. Only selected applicants will be invited for interviews at Mount Sinai. These interviews will be scheduled from mid-November to mid-December. A tour of the medical center will also be scheduled at that time for invited applicants.
When will I be notified of acceptance/rejection?
Letters of acceptance/rejection will be mailed out during winter break. This will allow you ample time to alter your course schedule, if necessary, for the spring semester.
I did not take the SAT test. Are ACT scores acceptable?
ACT scores are acceptable instead of SAT scores. We are particularly interested in your verbal scores. Recent successful applicants to this program have had ACT scores in the range of 31-35.
My combined Critical Reading (old Verbal)+ math SAT score is 1300. Am I still eligible to apply?
Although most successful applicants have a combined SAT score above 1350, there are other parts of your application that can make up for a lower combined SAT score. We are particularly interested in your Critical Reading (CR) SAT score because we have found that among our Humanities and Medicine Students, passing of the United States Medical Licensing Exams (USMLE's) on the first attempt is correlated with a CR SAT score above 650. We currently do not use the Writing score in the evaluation of applications.
Will I be adequately prepared for medical school?
Humanities and Medicine students have done exceptionally well in medical school, having been elected to AOA (the medical honor society) and accepted to first-rate residency programs in the same proportion as students who had completed the usual pre-med requirements.
The Summer Enrichment Program at Mount Sinai is open to all Humanities and Medicine students. This six-week program previews the first six weeks of four important first-year medical school courses (Gross Anatomy, Histology, Molecules and Cells, and Physiology) and gives students a level of confidence that enables them to successfully complete the first year of medical school.
I received a 5 on my AP Biology exam. Do I still have to take a year of biology in college?
Yes. You do not need to repeat introductory biology, but you must take a year of college biology, which may be advanced courses. Choose courses which will best prepare you for medical school, for example, cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, physiology, immunology, biochemistry.
