Overview

The use of Peer to Peer Networking Software such a KaZaA, BitTorrent, eDonkey, Napster, Gnutella, PeerEnabler, etc is forbidden on the campus network. These applications are use to distrubute stolen software and according to TruSecure Inc, 45% of all peer to peer downloads contain viruses, Trojan horses, etc.

Spyware Removal Tools

Due to a computer virus attack on the Mount Sinai campus, all computers that use Windows 2000, NT, or XP must run the Welch worm, Blaster worm, and Sobig removal tools listed below. After you have run the tools, you must run two patches to secure your machine - install them in order - patch one, then patch two.

To run the Welch removal tool:

  1. Open Internet Explorer (if it is not already open).
  2. Click on the Welch worm removal tool link below. You will be prompted to save (download) the FixWelch.exe file. We suggest saving the file to your desktop.
  3. After the file is saved, the dialogue box should indicate that the download was successful. You be given the opportunity to install the file - select the install button.
  4. The Symantec window will appear. You will see the W32.Welchia.Worm removal tool.
  5. Click Start. The process may take several minutes.
  6. If the Welch worm is found, it will be removed.

To run the Blaster removal tool:

  1. Open Internet Explorer (if it is not already open).
  2. Click on the Blaster worm removal tool link below. You will be prompted to save (download) the FixBlast.exe file. We suggest saving the file to your desktop.
  3. After the file is saved, the dialogue box should indicate that the download was successful. You be given the opportunity to install the file - select the install button.
  4. The Symantec window will appear. You will see the W32.Blaster.Worm removal tool.
  5. Click Start. The process may take several minutes.
  6. If the Blaster worm is found, it will be removed.
  7. If a pop-up window appears asking you to run the securtiy patch, click no.

To run the Sobig removal tool:

  1. Open Internet Explorer (if it is not already open).
  2. Click on the Sobig worm removal tool link below. You will be prompted to save (download) the FixSbigF.exe file. We suggest saving the file to your desktop.
  3. After the file is saved, the dialogue box should indicate that the download was successful. You be given the opportunity to install the file - select the install button.
  4. The Symantec window will appear. You will see the SoBig.F removal tool.
  5. Click Start. The process may take several minutes.
  6. If the SoBig virus is found, it will be removed.
  7. If a pop-up window appears asking you to run the securtiy patch, click no.

Install Security Patch:

  1. To identify which Windows operating system you are using - Windows 2000, XP, or NT - click on the Start button on your Windows toolbar.
  2. Select the patch listed below that corresponds to your operating system.
  3. Save and install the patch - you may be prompted to reboot after installing Patch One. If you are so prompted, reboot, then return to this page, and repeat the process for the second patch.
